Greening the grey through eco-engineering

Greening the grey through eco-engineering

Our Coast-R Network colleague, Professor Larissa Naylor has taken a key role in developing new CIRIA guidance – Greening coastal infrastructure through eco-engineering (C820).

This is the first practitioner-led publication of its kind, focused on enhancing the biodiversity and multifunctionality of engineered coastal assets through eco-engineering approaches.

Larissa is Professor of Geomorphology and Environmental Geography at the University of Glasgow and Co-Chair of the CIRIA Project Steering Group. She said,

“It is terrific to see this coastal-eco-engineering guidance being published as it underscores how far the field of greening the grey has evolved. I’m excited to see how this industry-wide backed toolkit will accelerate application of these techniques in the coming years.”

CIRIA is the construction industry research and information association. It is an independent, not-forprofit, member-based research organisation that exists to champion performance improvement in construction.

C820 is aimed at engineers, asset owners, ecologists, designers, contractors, planners, local authorities and regulators, as well as policymakers and academics involved in coastal adaptation and biodiversity enhancement. The new guidance brings together current knowledge and practice to help ‘green the grey’ and deliver more ecologically sensitive coastal assets.

Larissa recently appeared on the programme at the annual Flood and Coast conference, where she delivered a lecture on greening the grey with CIRIA colleagues.
